Barry and Brian — My Teachers Were Friends, Not Classrooms

What saved me in Canada was not a classroom. It was Barry and Brian, two local friends in Saskatoon. Honestly, I barely attended school — I just spent every day with them. And through that, they taught me real English, until one day learning became fun. As a boy I couldn't study at all; inside the classroom system, I was unteachable.

But within living friendships, I could learn. My name, Tomoki, means "to bring joy to friends" — and on the other side of the planet, friends saved my life. Learning doesn't only live in classrooms. Remember the friend who taught you something that mattered.
