Let me reveal the true purpose of having every executive write a life essay. Aboard the same ship, unless all hold the same aspiration and face the same direction, I alone can do nothing — I wanted to share our hearts as companions and comrades. "The same ship" is a common phrase.

But truly boarding one is not a matter of being on the payroll; it is believing that no one abandons ship on the day of the storm. That trust is not born of salary or contract, but of knowing one another's lives — where each came from, what each has wept over, why each is rowing. The essays were the device.
