Florence Nightingale — Statistics in the Shadow of the Lamp
The name Nightingale evokes the lamp-bearing angel in white — but her true weapon was not kindness alone. It was numbers. Born wealthy, she defied her family to choose nursing, then a lowly occupation. At the Crimean War's field hospitals she found soldiers dying en masse not from wounds but from infections bred by hospital squalor.
She did not plead with emotion; she proved with data — recording causes of death, classifying, tabulating, and inventing her famous rose diagram so that politicians who read no tables could grasp the truth at a glance: world-class data visualization, generations early.
Sanitary reform followed, and mortality plunged; she later became the Royal Statistical Society's first woman member. Kindness alone cannot change institutions; when numbers join kindness, the world finally moves. For a company whose motto is "make the invisible visible through data," she is a great senior beyond industry lines.
Does your kindness come with numbers attached?
