Who Were the Friends Who Saved You?

Mine has been a life continually saved by friends. Barry and Brian in Saskatoon saved an eighteen-year-old with zero English; a trading-company friend introduced me to my lifelong partner; that partner climbed with me out of the bottom. The man named "to bring joy to friends" has, it turns out, lived a life of receiving joy from them.

So today I ask: which friend saved you? The one who stayed on the phone the night you were lost; who invited you to a meal first when you lost your job; who simply sat beside you saying nothing. A face surely comes to mind.

If you haven't contacted that person in a while, send one short line after closing this page — "How are you?" is enough. The saved remember for life; the saviors usually don't — which is exactly why it is worth telling them. Friends are life's infrastructure: no bills arrive, so we forget the upkeep.
