Ichiro — The Only Road to "Somewhere Extraordinary"

4,367 hits across Japan and the U.S. Ichiro Suzuki articulated the secret of his staggering record himself: "Accumulating small things is the only way to reach somewhere extraordinary."

His daily life was the demonstration — arriving at the same hour, stretching in the same sequence, maintaining his own equipment, repeating the identical batting routine down to the angle of his bat. He reportedly disliked being called a genius: "I am not a genius — because I can explain why I get hits."

That word, explain, is electric: reproducible small actions, stacked longer and more precisely than anyone else. There is no single dramatic reversal that transforms a company either; there is only today's inspection done exactly, today's reply written carefully — until one day the stack reaches somewhere extraordinary.

Ninomiya's "accumulate the small" and Ichiro's words, two centuries apart, say the same thing. Truth, it seems, is one across the ages.
