Negotiation Begins at the Dinner Table
If I had to name one truth of business that holds everywhere, it would be this: important matters are decided not in the meeting room but at the dinner table. Contracts are negotiated across a desk, yet the real decision — whether to work with someone — is often settled over the meal beforehand.
A meal reveals character. How someone treats the staff, how they mention what they dislike, who they serve first, what makes them laugh: across cultures, people notice these things. My own lifelong partnership began with a single dinner, and the decision to work together from the next day was made at a table, not at a desk.
Abroad, eating the local food with genuine enjoyment is a form of respect that needs no words. I have also seen a negotiation cool when someone left the dishes untouched and spoke only of their own cuisine. The match begins before the menu is opened. What do you work for?
