Sadaharu Oh — A World Record Born From Swings on a Tatami Mat

Sadaharu Oh's world record of 868 home runs was built not in glamorous stadiums but on tatami mats. After team practice, he would visit his mentor Hiroshi Arakawa's home late at night, swing a Japanese sword, and repeat his swing on the tatami until the mats frayed — the foundation of his famous flamingo leg- kick style.

His known words: "Effort is always rewarded. If there is effort that goes unrewarded, it cannot yet be called effort." Severe — but weighty from a man with mats worn through behind his 868. His "effort" is not mere volume: it means continuing, rethinking, adjusting until rewarded — effort back-calculated from results.

And at the end, when his numbers declined, he retired cleanly: "Because I could no longer bat like Sadaharu Oh" — the words of a man whose own standard stood above others' evaluations. The world's best is not far away; it lies on the extension of tonight's practice swing.
