The Brain Writes While You Sleep — Sleep and Memory
The next ten essays are original pieces in which I retell what brain science has shown in my own language as a manager and a man. The first theme is sleep.
Neuroscience reports that memory is consolidated not at the moment of learning but during sleep: the sleeping brain replays the day, moves what matters onto long-term shelves, and discards the rest. Learning does not end at the desk; it is completed in bed.
For years I treated cutting sleep as proof of effort, and in my twenties I could force it through. Past forty I learned the truth: on days I shortchange sleep, my judgment turns coarse — and an executive whose decisions degrade cannot move a company forward however long he works.
So sleep now sits in my calendar not as rest but as part of the work. I place a good question and a good gratitude in my mind before sleeping, and the brain works with those materials all night. If you are trying hard and going nowhere, what you lack is probably not grit but sleep.
What do you work for?
