What Do You Work For? – A 64-Year-Old's Question

The title of this series is not mine. I borrowed it from the question our sixty-four-year-old CFO placed at the end of his essay: "I ask my sixty-four-year- old self anew: What do you work for?"

The weight of the question comes from where he stands — forty years across global finance, success and overnight loss all experienced, and still asking. It is not the question of a man who found his answer, but of a man who chose to keep asking. Most people consider this question once in youth and shelve it.

In truth, its answer is a living thing that changes with age — and should. That is why it closes every installment of this series: so that you, the reader, will reunite with it regularly. So, once more: what do you work for, now?
